Check Engine Light Diagnosis — first on our list

Every lamp,
in plain English.

Turn the key and every warning light on the dash comes on at once, then goes out again. That’s the lamp check — the car proving its bulbs work before it tells you anything. Here’s ours. Tap one.

Blue is informationAmber means look into it

Nine lamps, drawn by us. What each one usually means, and what we’d look at first.

Check engine

Amber — look into itWhat it usually means

The engine computer has stored a fault code. It can be something as small as a loose gas cap or as real as a misfire. The code points us at a circuit — it tells us where to look, not what to buy.

What we’d check first
  • Check Engine Light Diagnosis
  • Engine Performance
  • Spark Plugs, Ignition

Tap any lamp on the board

Brake system

Amber — look into itWhat it usually means

Usually one of three things: the parking brake is still set, the fluid is low, or a wear sensor has made contact. That last one is your brakes telling you quietly, before they start telling you loudly.

What we’d check first
  • Pads, Rotors, Wear Sensors
  • Brake Flush
  • Caliper Rebuilding

Tap any lamp on the board

Battery and charging

Amber — look into itWhat it usually means

This is the one people read wrong most often. It isn't a battery light, it's a charging light — something has stopped putting charge back in. A jump start will move the car. It won't fix it.

What we’d check first
  • Electrical Diagnosis
  • Battery
  • Starting and Charging

Tap any lamp on the board

Oil pressure

Amber — look into itWhat it usually means

Not the same thing as low oil. This one is pressure, which means oil may not be reaching where it needs to go. Of everything on this board, it's the one worth pulling over for.

What we’d check first
  • Oil Changes, Fluids, Filters
  • Engine Repair and Rebuild

Tap any lamp on the board

Coolant temperature

Amber — look into itWhat it usually means

Coolant is running hotter than it should. It can be a thermostat, a fan or a water pump. It can also be a head gasket. Those are very different jobs, so we find out which one it is first.

What we’d check first
  • Engine Performance
  • Head Gasket
  • Fluids

Tap any lamp on the board

Power steering

Amber — look into itWhat it usually means

The assist has dropped out. The car still steers — it just went heavy, and you'll feel it most at parking speed and in a tight turn.

What we’d check first
  • Power Steering Rack
  • Power Steering Fluid Flush

Tap any lamp on the board

Suspension

Amber — look into itWhat it usually means

A clunk over a bump, a pull to one side, one edge of a tire wearing faster than the rest. It often comes down to a joint, a bushing or a bearing rather than the spring itself.

What we’d check first
  • Spring/Shocks
  • Wheel Bearing/Hub
  • Control Arms
  • Ball Joints
  • Sub Frame

Tap any lamp on the board

Air conditioning

Amber — look into itWhat it usually means

It still blows — it just isn't cold any more. A recharge on its own is temporary if the refrigerant is going somewhere, so the leak test comes first.

What we’d check first
  • AC Diagnosis
  • Leak Test
  • AC Recharge

Tap any lamp on the board

High beam

Blue — informationWhat it usually means

Blue is the one colour on a dash that isn't asking you for anything. It's information — your high beams are on. We kept that rule for this whole page: blue means information, amber means look into it.

What we’d check first
  • Lighting
  • Electrical Diagnosis
  • Battery, Starting and Charging

Tap any lamp on the board

A car in our bay with the hood up

Not everything that goes wrong lights a lamp.

A slipping shift, a clutch on its way out, a flywheel — most of that arrives as a noise or a feeling, not a light. It is on our list too.

  • Transmission Diagnosis
  • Transmission Flush
  • Clutch
  • Flywheel

And in our own words on our service page: We offer many other services that are not listed.

In their words · Yelp and Google

Four of these five are about work we didn't do.

We didn't write any of these. They are on Yelp and Google exactly as they were left — spelling, punctuation and all.

We were told by another Subaru specialist in Tacoma -where we bought the car- that we'd need back brakes-when we brought the car to Top Spec they took the time to diagnose and to our surprise-they still had over a years worth of wear left on them!!!Michelle S.  ·  Yelp  ·  April 2017

Went in for a brake inspection and check the emergency brake. Mechanic found no issues and E brake was in tolerance. There was no charge and even checked the pressure in my spare. You can trust this business! I'm certainly going to for any future repairs.Chris J.  ·  Yelp  ·  March 2022

Great service. Chris the mechanic always gives me a fair price and works fast! Highly recommend.Howie R.  ·  Yelp  ·  June 2026

We're honest, upfront and straightforward when it comes to explaining what we found and what your choices are in getting your car fixed. We're in this for the long-term with our customers and we involve them in all of the steps in the decision-making process, sometimes we tell them not to waste money with an unnecessary repair.

Family ownedHere since 2014All makes and models

It is a clean, bright shop, which is not what most people expect a repair shop to look like. That is usually the first thing anyone says walking in.

We take a little more time explaining repair options than we probably have to. Chris still talks to every customer whose car he works on, about what he found and what it costs.

It is a family business, and we treat customers like family too.

It's been a challenge. Parts shortages, delivery delays and inflation have all combined to make things a bit harder than they used to be.TC LawRence Lo, owner — 2022
What used to take one day has stretched to several as we have to wait for parts. Inflation has sent prices up and we're trying to hold costs by cutting our profit margin and keeping things affordable for our customers.TC LawRence Lo, owner — 2022

How to reach us

Tell us what it’s doing.

Call us, text us, or leave the details here — whichever is easiest for you. The year, make and model lets us look up the right parts before you come in. The VIN if you have it, and only if you have it.

Or email us: Topspecautorepair@gmail.com

The VIN is on the corner of the dash on the driver's side, and on your insurance card. It's optional — it just gets us to the exact part the first time.

Or text the same details to 425-998-2819
